Coming up with this Disney-inspired Cookie Butter Milkshake recipe was a must do for us! This dream of a milkshake was our favorite from Disney Park's Christmas 2019 treats line-up. Served at Auntie Gravity's in Disney World's Magic Kingdom, we'd planned to try a sip and not overindulge. Shortly thereafter, we devoured the whole thing! The best way we can describe the flavor? Intoxicating.

So what kind of cookie is this Cookie Butter Milkshake recipe made from? Well, if you guessed a traditional sugar cookie, you're incorrect. The flavor comes from spice cookies called speculoos, popular in parts of Europe like Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. This speculoos cookie, when ground up and mixed with sugar and oil, makes magical cookie butter!

Cookie butter is a spreadable concoction like peanut butter. Its taste is most akin to a gingerbread cookie. The flavor is derived from a delightful combination of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and cardamom. If you've never had cookie butter before, do yourself a favor and try it out! Lotus brand Biscoff cookie butter, sold at Target, is a popular option.

Another reason why Disney's Christmas Cookie Milkshake recipe is so amazing is the giant Mickey marshmallow straw! While, this soft marshmallow decorates the shake perfectly. There's no tastebud surprises here: just a delightfully sugary marshmallow. As it turns out, making homemade marshmallows is a breeze-- see our Mickey Shaped Marshmallows recipe here. And, bonus: Once you've got this skill in your back pocket, you can make Mickey-shaped marshmallow wands!

For our Cookie Butter Milkshake recipe, we made homemade ice cream using a plastic bag (no fancy ice cream maker needed!). This only takes only takes about 10 minutes if you shake a bag of half & half, sugar, and vanilla in a larger bag of ice.

While making your own ice cream isn't necessary, we find homemade ice cream to have the silkiest soft-serve consistency perfect for milkshakes. That means that you won't need help getting this milkshake to travel through the red, candy-striped straw. Believe us: You'll want every last drop!

    Ingredients

    Homemade Ice Cream Ingredients

    • Note: If you don't want to make your own ice cream, substitute the homemade ice cream ingredients listed below with 2 cups vanilla ice cream (packed) + 1/2 cup milk.
    • 2 cups half and half (1 cup heavy cream + 1 cup milk)
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1/3 cup salt
    • Ice. We used approximately 1.5 standard-sized trays of ice.

    Milkshake Mix-In Ingredients

    • 1 tablespoon cookie butter Like Biscoff, sold at Target
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

    Milkshake Decoration Ingredients (Optional)

    • 1 Mickey shaped marshmallow. Use this recipe and add green food coloring when blending the marshmallow mixture.
    • Green food coloring (see above).
    • 1 teaspoon melted white candy coating. We used 3, Ghiradelli brand melting wafters.
    • Whipped cream.
    • 1 tablespoon holiday themed sprinkles.

    Special Supplies

    • 1 red and white striped, paper, smoothie straw (optional).
    • Small food processor.
    • 1 18-ounce plastic cup
    • 1 gallon-sized plastic freezer bag. (If you choose to make your own ice cream.)
    • 2 quart-sized plastic freezer bags. (If you choose to make your own ice cream.)

    Instructions

    • If using a Mickey-shaped marshmallow, adhere it to the straw using white candy coating. Melt the candy coating, apply it to the straw and press the straw onto the marshmallow, making sure the straw extends 1" above the top center of Mickey's head. Set aside.
    • Make the ice cream using this recipe from Delish, but make twice as much ice cream as the recipe calls for. We divided the ice cream ingredients into two bags (1 cup half & half per bag) and shook the 2 bags together in 1, gallon-sized bag.
      Here's a few tips:
      - Make sure that all of your bags are tightly sealed!
      - When shaking the bag to freeze the ice cream, wear winter gloves or cover your hands with kitchen towels to protect your hands from the cold.
      - When you shake the bag, the ice will melt and condensation will build up on the outside of the bag. To prevent a mess, shake the bag over a sink.
      - As the ice melts with the salt, it will look like there's cloudy water in the bag. Don't mistake this for your ice cream bags breaking open. It's okay!
      - After the ice cream is frozen, quickly rinse the outsides of the bags in cold water (removing the salt from the bag).
    • Put the ice cream in a small food processor. Add the cookie butter and nutmeg and pulse until blended. You have your milkshake!
    • Transfer the milkshake to a cup, then top with whipped cream and then 1 tablespoon of holiday themed sprinkles. Finish by adding the Mickey-shaped straw. Enjoy!
